Text Neck And It’s Associated Neck Pain Problems

All I can think about when my neck is sore is “Well I must have slept badly last night”, or “I wonder if I have the right pillow”? Never do I question the fact that I was using my mobile endlessly throughout the day. My daughter has her entire social life wrapped in the 3” by 4” device. Our mobile phones have become a conduit to social, work and personal lives. The average person uses their mobile 2.45 hours per day and the millennials are stacking up to 4 hours use a day.

Is Text Neck harmful to our health?

Text Neck

This picture is of a condition in chiropractic as Forward Head Posture, or more commonly known as Text Neck.

Forward Head Posture

When we are texting that 60LBS are equivalent to approx. 3.75 bowling balls hinging on bones on your neck that is only approx. 17.40 mm by 23.44mm in size. https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/dd00/2e525a3985e68b85abbc7074722ec5324a9b.pdf

But wait there’s more………….

Dr. Ahn at our clinic in Kallangur says:

“With the rise of the use of mobile phones and computers we are seeing more incidences of Forward Head Posture in younger people.”

So what are the SYMPTOMS of Forward Head Posture?

  • Muscle soreness
  • Rounded shoulders
  • Impaired respiratory function
  • Poor postural control
  • Increased mortality
  • Low quality of life
  • Deficits in ROM (range of movement)

What can you do if you are affected or notice any of your children that are developing round shoulders?

The spinal research group provides an example of a patient who was treated with a succession of spinal adjustments and a shoulder brace worn for 7 minutes after each adjustment over a period of 8 weeks. The patient showed not only a marked improvement in pain and ROM but also his posture was corrected by 12mm.
